Psychotherapy is a professional relationship with the purpose of fostering understanding, effectiveness, resilience and change.
The quality of your life can be improved when you know what to do, have skilled and experienced help, and opportunities to develop new ways of handling life experience.
Psychotherapy helps improve one’s quality of life, enhance relationships, cope with experience, develop skill to overcome obstacles and reduce distress.
We work together to better cope with emotional, physical, sexual or relationship challenges. Behaviors that interfere with your goals and satisfaction can be adapted. You may seek to understand and alter beliefs that distort the way you think of yourself and others, or that undermine your effectiveness. And we may help you understand and sooth painful feelings.
Therapy may focus on distressing symptoms or helping you live more easily with the past, while increasing self-compassion or discovering new strengths. As you understand yourself more deeply, you develop self compassion and discover hidden strengths.
Our relationship can help you feel less alone as you face personal, relational and situational challenges.
The first few sessions are to decide if we’re going to work together. Then we’ll spend time getting a clear picture of your situation and general goals. We’ll also get to know one another so the therapeutic work begins with a solid relationship.
As we understand your situation more fully, we will give it new meaning and understanding. We will work together to develop an effective plan, identify specific goals, decide how to measure progress and consider realistic strategies. You will develop new ways to think and feel about your experiences. Sometimes you’ll change longstanding patterns. I’ll offer you alternate perspectives. We’ll address difficult reactions and, at times, develop strategies and tools.
Success depends on persistence, support and being adaptive. We’ll regularly discuss your progress and revise how we approach your situation to address obstacles and develop sustainable ways to live that get you results.
